Rabindranath Tagore’s journey into the realm of world literature has often been shaped by translation, selective reception, and the expectations of Western literary circles. While winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 was a significant milestone for Tagore’s global recognition, it also set the stage for a somewhat limited interpretation that highlighted his spiritual lyricism, often overlooking the rich aesthetic, philosophical, and political layers of his work. This review article delves into the key critical discussions surrounding Tagore’s role in world literature, with a focus on translation practices, Indian aesthetic traditions, postcolonial interpretations, and his reception around the globe. By weaving together insights from literary theory, comparative literature, and cultural studies, the article makes a case for rethinking Tagore as a cosmopolitan modernist whose work defies simplistic categorization. The review also shines a light on recent contributions that question previous canonical views and advocates for a more diverse and conversational approach to Tagore studies within the broader discourse of world literature.
