Role of Artificial Intelligence in Research and Higher Education: Trends, Opportunities, and Challenges
Author : Dr. Rajiv Kumar
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in higher education and academic research, reshaping the ways knowledge is created, disseminated, and assessed. From intelligent tutoring systems and learning analytics to automated data processing and predictive modelling, AI now influences teaching practices, research methodologies, and institutional decision-making. In recent years, universities across the world have increasingly integrated AI tools to improve learning outcomes, enhance research efficiency, and support data-driven governance. These technologies assist educators in designing personalised and adaptive learning environments, while also helping researchers handle large datasets, identify patterns, and generate new insights with greater accuracy and speed. This research article critically examines the role of AI in research and higher education, highlights theoretical frameworks such as Constructivism, Connectivism, Activity Theory, and Sociotechnical Systems Theory, and evaluates opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption. The article concludes that while AI enhances productivity, personalisation, and innovation, concerns regarding ethics, data privacy, algorithmic bias, and academic integrity must be addressed through robust institutional policies to ensure responsible and equitable use.
