Psychological Consequences of Unequal Access to Digital Technology in Education

Author : Dr. Bindi Kumari

Abstract

The rapid integration of digital technology into contemporary educational systems has introduced a new dimension of inequality - one whose repercussions extend far beyond academic performance into the realm of psychological well-being. This paper investigates the psychological consequences faced by students who lack equitable access to digital technology in education, a phenomenon widely referred to as the "digital divide." Drawing upon perspectives rooted in educational psychology, cognitive science, and socio-emotional development, this study identifies and analyses a cluster of serious psychological outcomes including inferiority complex, anxiety, social isolation, cognitive fatigue, disinterest in learning, diminished self-confidence, and a measurable decline in academic performance. The research further argues that these mental health impacts are not isolated or transient; rather, they compound over time, shaping students’ long-term personality development and their outlook on future opportunities. This paper makes an original contribution to the growing discourse on digital equity by centering the psychological dimension of educational technology inequality, which remains underexplored in existing literature.
