Challenges and opportunities in the adoption of genetically engineered drought-tolerant Indian Mustard: A case study

Author : Deepak Kumar Samant and Dr. Anubha Joshi

Abstract

The introduction of genetically engineered crops offers a promising solution to the challenges of climate change, particularly in enhancing drought tolerance in key agricultural crops. This case study explores the practical challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption of genetically engineered drought-tolerant Indian mustard. Brassica juncea. Through interviews with plant geneticists, agronomists, and farmers, as well as an analysis of field performance data, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing the adoption of genetically engineered crops in India. The findings highlight the benefits of genetic modifications in improving drought tolerance and yield stability but also underscore the challenges related to gene expression stability, off-target effects, economic barriers, and public perception. The study concludes that successful adoption requires a holistic approach that integrates technical, economic, and social considerations.
