Author : T Nandhakumar and G Sriram and S Subathra

Abstract

This research initiative examines the widespread issue of violence against women migrant workers, with a particular focus on the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This study aims to comprehensively examine the multifaceted dimensions of violence experienced by this vulnerable population in the context of their migration for employment. Utilising an interdisciplinary approach, the research integrates sociological, economic and gender perspectives to provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by migrant women workers. The inquiry unfolds against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu's emerging industrial and labor landscape, where migrant women form a significant part of the workforce. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, the study seeks to identify the root causes, manifestations and consequences of violence against women. Special attention is paid to the intersections of gender, migration, and labor, and how these factors intersect and contribute to migrant women's vulnerability to various forms of violence. The research intends to provide actionable insights to policy makers, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders involved in labor and migration management. The study aims to unravel the complex web of violence faced by migrant women workers and inform strategies to protect their rights and well-being. Ultimately, the findings are intended to stimulate discourse, policy reform, and advocacy efforts aimed at fostering a more equitable and safer environment for migrant women workers in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
