Abstract
The economic and social impact of tourism has increased significantly in recent decades. Regretfully, the evolution of statistical frameworks and concepts for tourism has not kept up with the shifts in the nature, importance, and prospects for future expansion of tourism globally. The issue with calculating the economic impact of tourism expenditures is that no system of national accounts or economic statistics recognizes tourism as a separate industry. Consequently, the economic benefits of tourism are not immediately apparent. The tourism business is "hidden" in other industries like lodging, transportation, and telecommunications, among others. By calculating the demand for different items, the "tourism industry" is determined from the demand side. Through the identification of tourism commodities and, consequently, the sectors that are associated with or typical of tourism, as well as the computation of their relative dependency on demand created by tourism, this enables the establishment of a link to the supply side of the tourism business. The growth of tourism in a nation contributes to the enhancement of social and cultural values, the creation of direct and indirect job possibilities, and national income. India's tourism industry is the country's second-largest source of foreign exchange earnings, although its full potential has not yet been realized. A comprehensive set of infrastructure, including power, water, roads, trains, and airplanes, lodging, and other amenities, will significantly boost tourism. The degree to which these bare necessities are provided to visitors determines how many tourists visit India, and particularly Tamil Nadu. General national planning and a well-coordinated national tourism sector program are particularly important in a developing nation like India.
