Women’s Education as a Tool of Social Transformation: Arya Samaj’s Role in Establishing Schools and Advocating for Female Literacy

Abstract

Based on the equality doctrine of the Vedas and inspired by Swami Dayanand Saraswati's reformist ideas, the Arya Samaj aimed to change Indian society via education in addition to challenging long-standing patriarchal customs. The founding of schools and Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) institutions, which provided females with access to education at a period when female literacy was often disregarded and discouraged, was one of its major accomplishments. These establishments gave women the intellectual, social, and cultural resources they needed to oppose backward practices like child marriage, gender discrimination, and the denial of fundamental rights in addition to giving them access to education.

The study underscores how Arya Samaj reformers linked education to broader questions of social mobility, family reform, and women’s participation in public life. By analyzing the founding of girls’ schools, the expansion of DAV institutions, and the moral as well as ideological campaigns to raise female literacy, the paper highlights the interconnection between education and women’s empowerment. The analysis further demonstrates that Arya Samaj’s emphasis on education was not merely an academic pursuit but a conscious effort to reshape social structures, ensure gender equity, and redefine women’s roles within the nation’s progress.

The findings reveal that Arya Samaj’s commitment to women’s education laid the foundation for long-term societal changes, influencing legal reforms, public policy, and later women’s rights movements in India. This contribution positioned education as a tool of social transformation, creating pathways for women’s enhanced agency, economic participation, and leadership within the community. Thus, Arya Samaj’s educational reforms not only promoted literacy but also became a catalyst for reimagining gender relations in colonial and post-colonial India.
