Community-Based Conservation: Integrating Local Knowledge for Biodiversity Protection
Author : DN Gatlewar
Abstract
Community-based conservation (CBC) represents a participatory approach that empowers local communities to actively engage in the management and protection of biodiversity. Rooted in the understanding that people and nature are interconnected, CBC emphasizes the use of traditional ecological knowledge, cultural values, and locally driven practices to ensure sustainable resource use. This approach challenges top-down conservation models by integrating social, economic, and ecological perspectives, thereby promoting stewardship and long-term commitment to ecosystem health. In many regions, community involvement has proven vital for preserving endangered species, restoring degraded habitats, and fostering coexistence between humans and wildlife. By merging scientific methods with indigenous wisdom, CBC offers a holistic and inclusive framework for achieving both biodiversity conservation and community well-being.
