Applied technologies and Social Work: Bridging educational gaps in Visakhapatnam’s new normal

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated educational inequities, pushing disadvantaged populations back into poverty and forcing many students in tribal and rural regions near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, into makeshift home-schooling environments, examines the challenges faced by these student communities like limited access to digital resources, inadequate support systems, and disruptions in learning environments and also explores how applied technologies like websites, online classes, and digital tools remain utilized to enhance educational delivery along with identifies the critical role of social work interventions, including counselling, mental health support, and community engagement, in addressing these challenges.

A mixed-method approach was adopted, utilizing applied technologies and social work interventions in educational settings, such as group discussions, case studies, and interview schedules to gather qualitative insights and a random sample of 320 students from public and private schools in tribal, rural, and urban areas near Visakhapatnam remain analysed using statistical methods like Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Exploratory data analysis (EDA), chi-square tests, and descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, and correlation analyses) visual representations such as box plots, histograms, mean plots and Q-Q plots, remains employed to interpret the data, the study reveals that social work services, including group discussions, mental health counselling, and community programs, improve students' socio-emotional well-being and promote resilience.

The study emphasizes the importance of a blended learning approach that integrates traditional in-person teaching with digital formats to provide inclusive education for all students by incorporating social work practices and methods, schools can create supportive and adaptive learning environments and bridge the digital divide, aim to promote quality education, ensuring schools remain better equipped to meet the future needs of student community in the new normal.
