Abstract
Adolescence is a crucial stage marked by rapid emotional, social, and physical changes. In today’s world, teenagers are under growing academic pressure, social expectations, and lifestyle shifts that can impact their mental and physical well-being (Van Dyk & Becker, 2019). This study aimed to explore the relationship between peer pressure, stress, and sleep quality among adolescents aged 13 to 19 years.
A sample of 300 adolescents was selected. Data was collected using three standardized psychological tools: the Modified Peer Pressure Scale (Santor, Messervey, & Kusumakar, 2000) to measure peer influence, the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, & Mermelstein, 1983) to assess stress levels, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (Buysse, Reynolds, Monk, Berman, & Kupfer, 1989) to evaluate sleep patterns. After data collection, descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were carried out to find patterns and relationships.
The results indicated a mild positive correlation between peer pressure and stress, suggesting that adolescents who experience higher peer pressure also report higher stress levels (Steinberg & Monahan, 2007). Additionally, a mild negative correlation was observed between stress and sleep quality, indicating that adolescents with higher stress tended to report poorer sleep quality (Beattie, Kyle, Espie, & Biello, 2015; Lemola, Perkinson-Gloor, Brand, Dewald-Kaufmann, & Grob, 2015). Although these relationships were not statistically significant, they reflect meaningful trends commonly observed in adolescent experiences.
Previous research supports these findings, as insufficient sleep among adolescents has been linked to emotional and behavioral problems (El-Sheikh, Kelly, Buckhalt, & Hinnant, 2010). Moreover, adolescents' emotional regulation and mood are strongly influenced by their social interactions and quality of sleep (Beattie et al., 2015). Stress and peer dynamics can further impact sleep patterns, affecting academic performance and mental health (Lemola et al., 2015).
Understanding the interconnectedness of peer pressure, stress, and sleep provides valuable insights for parents, teachers, and mental health professionals.
It reminds us that nurturing an adolescent’s mental health requires more than academic support-it demands awareness of their social world, emotional burdens, and sleep health.
