Abstract
Yoga has emerged as a significant addition to athletic training programs, particularly for track and field athletes, due to its potential to enhance both physical and psychological well-being. This study explores the role of yogic practices in reducing stress and anxiety levels among male sprinters.
Purpose of the Study: The primary objective of this research was to investigate the impact of an eight-week yoga intervention on the psychological variables of stress and anxiety among track and field athletes.
Methodology: A total of 60 male sprinters, aged between 20 and 25 years, were randomly selected from various universities and colleges in Telangana State. Participants were divided into two groups: Experimental Group (n = 30): Received an eight-week yogic training program that included asanas and pranayama. Control Group (n = 30): Did not participate in any yoga or related training activities. Psychological variables were assessed using the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI – Y1 and Y2) both before and after the intervention.
Results: Data analysis revealed a statistically significant reduction in both stress and anxiety levels in the experimental group compared to the control group post-intervention. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of yoga in mitigating psychological distress.
Conclusion: The study concludes that regular practice of yoga can be a powerful tool for managing stress and anxiety among athletes. Incorporating yogic practices into training regimens may contribute to improved mental health and performance in competitive sports.
