Community Organization Practices: A Review of Gavimath Samsthana's Legacy and Adaptations for Indigenous Social Work

Abstract

Sri Gavisiddheshwara Matha is also known as the Gavimath Samsthana and it is famous spiritual, educational and cultural centre situated in Koppal district of Karnataka with a history of more than 800 years. This article examines the role played by this institution in community organization; reviewing its historical practices, traditions and social welfare among other contributions. With review methodology, the study focuses on education, cultural preservation and poverty alleviation through an examination of the activities at Samsthana within indigenous social work frameworks. The analysis provides an insight into how Rothman’s models of locality development, social planning and social action inform community empowerment as well as the approach towards social development used by Samsthana. These practices include collective action, educating interventions, cultural tradition integration and provision of welfare services are examined for their relevance to current social setting need.

This article is a review seeking to explore how Gavimath Samsthana has been organizing a community for decades now. It highlights how this institution has affected the socio-cultural aspects of the area in addition to assessing its adaptability towards modern-day challenges. The aim of this study is to show that under broader discourse of Indian Social Work indigenous frameworks can contribute towards sustainability for communities through examining such practices from yesterday up to date.
